Weed Wednesday.

Weed Wednesday.

BY SKYLER ISAAC

The date is October 17th, 2018. It is 10:45 in the morning and the sky above is overcast and grey.

Despite the dull weather, the group of people standing in line are anything but dreary. The line has been growing at a steady pace for the last half an hour, and everyone is an a cheery mood. They are waiting for the retail store in front of them to open.

While the people gathered have been waiting for less than an hour, today is the day that many Canadians have been waiting for for decades now.

For as of today, recreational marijuana is now legal all across the country.***Marijuana has been illegal in Canada since some time in the late 1920s. While there have been many attempts at legalization over the past couple of decades, none of these legislations went through. It has been possible to obtain medical marijuana, but only with a proper prescription from a doctor.

Now, any citizen 19 years of age or older can legally purchase up to 30 grams at a time.Note that it is still illegal to imbibe in public.***When 11 AM rolls around, the doors of Cannabis Yukon open, and out steps a man. He is dressed in a plain, grey suit. “Happy Weed Wednesday,” he proclaims with a grin. The crowd chuckles with him. With the general mood and air of excitement, he may as well be guarding the entrance to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.

The man goes on to proclaim that only a dozen people may enter at a time. There are at least five times that many people waiting in line. It’s a long wait, but one that is worth it. Inside, employees walk customers through the various laws related to the recreational consumption of cannabis. There are only a few display cases, and they are sparsely decorated with various brands of flavored wrapping papers. The product itself is harbored safely behind the counter.

Employees chat easily with customers, and not a trace of judgement lingers on anyone’s face.Truly, this is the beginning of a new era for our country.
